Many in our president's circle recommend restraint, and careful, measured planning. but as we know by now, DJT plays seemingly fast and loose. This may be in his benefit on the world stage, either way, against the most dire warnings from friends and enemies alike, a surgical strike was ordered earlier today to take out the chemical weapons infrastructure in Syria and the means to launch offensive strikes within the country from Russian and Iranian controlled airbases.
Russia, an ally of Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad, the second generation of bloody dictator in Syria, has pledged to knock missiles out of the air and threatened to launch torpedo attacks against guided missile destroyers in the Mediterranean sea. Trumps response was quick and off the cuff: yea? Russia better get ready for bombs, nice and new and smart!
Russia won't be shooting down any missiles or anything else with these inflatable dummies. but they are evidence that Russia is projecting a superiority they do not posses. Also notable are the clear support lines and proxy positions within the Syrian 'uncivil' war.
Syria is battling to stave off the power grab of ISIS which gained traction, money and ambition during the Obama years. Once a small faction, they promised a caliphate to their fighters and the volunteers poured in. They met with success in Iraq where Obama had drawn down the american military presence there. But ISIS looked west to neighboring Syria to expand it's control. When ISIS made their intentions known and began to take over Syrian towns and cities, opposition to ISIS and to Assad's regime sprung up. These are the forces the US tried to support. Longtime ally Russia joined the fight with Assad to repel the ISIS invaders, and the local charm as well. Also aligned with the Syrian regime is the neighboring Iranians and their revolutionary guard. The IRG has been well known advocates and trainers of Hamas militants in Jordan and elsewhere and it is through Hamas that Iran supports the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
As depicted above, neither the Russians, the Syrians or the Iranians want anything to do with the US military. Our current president is on a collision course with the bad actors of the world. Let us hope he can finish the job.
